God formed man from the ground, breathed into his nostrils the breath of life making him a living being. He placed the man in the Garden of Eden to work it and take care of it. God noticed the task given man was beyond doing alone so He decided to make for Adam a suitable helper. He had already formed all the beasts of the field and the birds of the air out of the ground, so He brought them to Adam to see what name the man would give each creature. Whatever Adam called the creature, that was its name. But no suitable helper was found, so God created Eve and brought her to Adam as a suitable helper (Gen 2).
Observations for living today:
God created a world of wonder and then chose to give stewardship of all of it to man, i.e., God was a partner with Adam and Eve; He creates, they name and manage.
God thought teaming was better than being alone. From everything created, none were good enough (suitable) to be helpful to Adam, so He created a partner that was - what a wonderful artisan He is.
So in the very beginning, before disobedience took its place, God, man and woman were a team operating in accordance with His purpose and plan. While the rebellion that followed interrupted and certainly confused the team, it did not dissolve the team or negate the plan or reverse the purpose. Ever notice how beautiful every baby creature is? The primal emotion to care for and name reaches back to what I believe is God's purpose in creating a living being. He creates, we manage. Everything I've ever done in this life has been shared with a partner created by God's design for me; we celebrated 44 years of partnership this year and we are still on our honeymoon. I cannot imagine working alone or being able to accomplish anything of substance without both of them active and present in my life.
Reality in Christ:
As Christians we believe the reality in Christ's words as recorded by John. "If anyone loves me, he will obey my teaching. My Father will love him and we will come to him and make our home with him (Jn 14:23);" and "I have told you these things, so that in me you may have peace. In this world you will have trouble. But take Heart! I have overcome the world (Jn 16:33)." The partnership formed with two living beings has been upgraded; the reality in Christ, "we are God's workmanship, created in Christ Jesus to do good works, which God prepared in advance for us to do (Eph 2:10)."
